In social studies education for young children, social science concepts should reflect philosophical and historical knowledge and discussions on social phenomena and this requirement is always a big issue for research. In particular, teachers in the field of early childhood education have many limitations in dealing with young children’s concept of death. To young children’s questions which arise out of their interest or curiosity, teachers often change the topic of conversation or approach it in a fragmentary or unrealistic way. Such an attitude may result in young children’s misunderstanding and confusion as well as anxiety and fear about death. The present study attempted to visit a cemetery near the community, and focused on discussing the concept of death and inducing children’s understanding of the concept in a positive and desirable direction. For the cemetery visit, the study applied various activities and procedures to teaching-learning, and young children approached the concept of death in a natural way. In addition, this study provided learning opportunities for extending various concepts in connection to daily works. Through this study, we discussed alternative teaching-learning methods for approaching the theme of death as a social science concept and suggested implications for field education.
