This study analyzes the components of young children’s social competence and develops a scale to evaluate young children's social competence. The study includes verification of validity, credibility and level of excellence of the Social Competence Rating Scale for Young Children. Subjects were 1370 children 4 and 5 years of age living in Seoul. Tests on the validity, reliability and level of excellence of the questionnaires were performed in order to secure the validity of a young children’s social competence rating scale as a proper tool for teachers at children’s education institutes to determine young children’s social competence. The Social Competence Rating Scale for Young Children was developed as a 41-items rating scale. Item analysis and Confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed four social competency factors: ‘regulation of emotion’, ‘peer relations skill’, ‘the comprehension of social rules’ and ‘emotionality’. Correlations between teachers’ rating and children's ratings were all significant. Cronbach's α ranged from .73 to .88 for four subscales and .89 for the total scale. These results indicate that the Social Competence Rating Scale for Young Children can be used as a valid and reliable assessment to measure the social competence of four and five year old children.
