In order to examine the differences between narrative structures used by a child alone and a child with a peer, fictional narratives told by 5 year-olds were analyzed. To address the differences in two conditions, how narrative structure is associated with not only inclusion of references to internal states and references to psychological causation, but also the number of the episodes in a narrative were analyzed. Middle-class Korean children (N=85), were asked to invent stories with props. An analyse of their 125 codable narratives revealed that the narratives told by a child alone and a child with a peer did not differ in references to internal states, references to psychological causality or the number of episodes. However, the narratives in higher stages included more references to internal states, more references to psychological causation, and more number of episodes than the narratives in lower stages. It is suggested that the effect of peer collaboration be studied further in relation with characteristics of a task and with peer competence level to expand our understandings of young children’s narrative construction.
