Claire is a lesbian with a daughter named Poppy and her ex-husband Lawrence wants to raise Poppy out of revenge, not of love. Claire does not want to lose the custody battle against Lawrence, simply because she is regarded as an unfit mother. Claire’s case is likened to an ancient Greek myth of Demeter, a goddess of the harvest and agriculture, presiding over grains and fertility of the earth. When her daughter, Persephone, started to menstruate, she was taken away by Hades of the Underworld. Once she was there, nothing grew on earth. Demeter begged Hades to return her daughter and they compromised so that Persephone stayed with her mother in this world for three quarters of a year and the rest in the underworld. Since then trees and plants grew and bore fruits. Claire is a history teacher and her two students turned out to be lesbians. Seeing one of the student admit she is a lesbian, she confesses she is also a lesbian. Because of this, she is about to lose her job and her daughter. However, this follows suit and her boss comes out as a lesbian, too. Claire’s mother Joyce helps her to sneak Poppy out of England to the US. Claire and Poppy now comprise a restructured family, controlling their own life.
