Audre Lorde seeks to overcome the various negative affects permeating American society by reconstructing the myth of the black African Goddess and Dahomey female warriors in her poetry and her biomythographical novel. She concretely shows the growth of her character Jami, who tries to move into a world of multi-layered sexual plurality rather than a normative heterosexual dichotomous life. To establish the subject of black lesbians, Lorde summons African goddesses and warriors such as Yemanja, Mawurisa, Sebulisa, and Dahomey. She reconstitutes the unicorn myth in Black Unicorn, superimposing the pain and sorrow of black lesbians. In Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, Lorde ritually performs unification, which she symbolizes via Afrekete who gives an abundance of wisdom. In addition, Lorde’s identification with the figure of the Amazonian female warrior criticizes modern medicine for not sufficiently considering women’s bodies and emotions in The Cancer Journals. The black lesbian subjects in her poetry and novel struggle to break through racial, class, and sexual barriers. This article examines how they are able to traverse the patriarchal and heterosexual-centered society while converting it.
