Unlike the common bias that domestic violence is a private matter and should be treated as such, domestic violence has negative effects over all of victim’s every aspect of life including victim’s job performance ability. Employees who are victim or at risk of domestic violence suffer from low productivity, absenteeism, loss of worktime, high labour turnover, and job loss. Pervasive effects of domestic violence also spills over into the entire workplace. In this respect, domestic violence and the workplace are highly related and intertwined. Given the recognition that domestic violence is a workplace issue, some state governments have enacted legislations to provide employees who are victims of domestic violence paid/unpaid leave for seeking help and safety. Under the Domestic Violence Leave Act, employees are usually entitled to paid/unpaid leave for getting help or helping family member or household member who are victims of domestic violence or sexual violence. The reasonable reasons for taking leave include seeking medical attention, counseling, victim services, or legal assistance. Obtaining a protective order from the court and securing housing, appearing before a grand jury are regarded good reasons for taking a leave. Such legislations and polices can contribute to protecting victims of domestic violence by helping not only employees who are affected by domestic violence, but also constructing peer support networks and understandings in the workplace. In this respect, this paper suggests that enacting such a statute should be considered for future action in terms of protecting victims of domestic violence in South Korea.
