Report Errors
The place of Bergson and Poincaré in the history of theory of relativity is rather problematic in that they proposed a non-standard, i.e. non-Einsteinian, interpretation of the theory. In this study, I first show how Bergson was led to our natural belief in the unique and universal concept of time from the main argument of relativity theory and also from its concept of simultaneity. Next I discuss Poincaré’s understanding of space and its application to that of time, and his analysis of the principle of relativity. The study aims to reevaluate the status of Bergson and Poincaré in the history of formation and interpretation of relativity theory, as well as, to give a starting point for a comparative study of the two figures.
