This paper attempts to examine the text dealing with Jacob in Bethel and Deborah’s death in Genesis 35. For this purpose, “compositional criticism” is applied. This methodology seeks to find out “intentions and achievements of the author / text revealed in the final text.” Genesis 35:1-15 is a combination of various elements, not a simple heap of elements, but a well-structured, carefully textured composition. The three units (vv. 1-7, 8, 9-15) that appear as part of Jacob’s return report are bound by Bethel. The first part (vv. 1-7) highlights Jacob’s action in eliminating defilement and moving toward a new life. The last part (vv. 9-15) highlights Jacob as a person made new through the “name changing.” The two parts correspond to each other in the macro context. With a blessing, God responds to Jacob, who purifies himself and exterminates foreign idols. Jacob also buried himself when he buried the Gentile gods. Thus, he is given a “new name.” This change means the dying of the old man and rebirth as a new man. At the heart of the description of these two anecdotes is the report of Deborah’s death. In the context of Genesis 35:1-15 the report of Deborah’s death strengthens the meaning of Jacob’s death. It confirms the death of Jacob and anticipates the rebirth of Jacob. In this sense, the report of Deborah’s death in Genesis 35:8 is not the “stumbling block” of the text, but its center and pivot.
