The most urgent educational problem in elementary schools is the enhancement of character education and requirement of various character education programs that take into consideration the changing interests of children in the present day. In this study, we aimed to validate the development and effects of animal-assisted play therapy programs for the improvement of elementary school character education at A elementary school in S city. The subjects for this study were elementary school students who were recommended by their home room teachers who wanted to participate in exciting character school programs with dogs. All recommended students participated in a character pretest. Fifteen students who received low scores on the character pretest were put in the experimental group and another 15 who received similar scores in the experimental group were put in the control group. The animal-assisted play therapy program proceeded in 10 sessions once per week for 60 minutes with 15 students in the experimental group for three months from April to July 2017; there were no activities for the control group. The measure included scale of character to analyze pre-test and post-test scores. The same scale was used for the control group. Data collected in this study were processed with SPSS/WIN 19.0 and analysis methods were as follows. First, the animal-assisted play therapy program was effective for elementary school students’ character education and meaningful enhancement of the character scale for the experimental group. Based on the results of this study, animal-assisted play therapy programs are effective for developing elementary school students’ character education.
