문화재의 가치를 적극적으로 인식하면서 문화재 활용이 점차 활발해지고 있다. 이에 비해 무형문화재 활용은 상대적으로 활성화되지 못하고 있다. 문화재는 그것의 특성과 가치에 적합한 방법으로 활용할 때 그 의미를 충분히 살릴 수 있다. 이에 비추어 이 연구에서는 주로 행위로 이루어진다는 점을 무형문화재가 갖는 일반적 특성으로 분석하고, 활동 또는 행위에 관한 이론인 실존적 진정성(existential authenticity)을 틀로 삼아 무형문화재 활용 방향을 모색하였다. 전통적 놀이⋅축제 및 기예⋅무예에 속하는 기지시줄다리기와 공예, 미술 등에 관한 전통기술에 해당하는 한산모시짜기를 사례로 그 수준을 높일 수 있는 무형문화재 활용에 관해 살펴본 것이다. 한편 이 연구에서는 개별 무형문화재의 활용 방안을 모색한 선행연구들과 달리, 무형문화재 활용 방법을 찾으면서도 이론적 분석을 시도하였고, 무형문화재 분야에서는 사실상 금기시해온 ‘진정성’이라는 개념을 새로운 시각에서 무형문화재 활용과 연계하여 연구했으며, 무형문화재의 본질적 가치에 충실한 질적 활용 방향을 모색하였다. 실존적 진정성이란, 사람이 주체가 되어 육체적⋅정신적 행위를 자신이 직접 행함으로써 자아를 느끼고 자신이 실존함을 경험하게 되는 수준에 이르는 것을 말한다. 무형문화재는 행위와 정신적 작용을 통해 이루어진다는 점에서 그것이 일반인이 직접 행할 수 있는 종목이기만 하다면 실존적 진정성을 경험하기에 적합한 것이다. 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 공동체 구성원들이 함께 형성하고 이어온 무형문화재를 경험함으로써 실존적 진정성을 느끼는 것은 문화적으로도 그 가치가 크다. 무형문화재를 직접 행함으로써 실존적 진정성을 경험하는 수준에 이르는 것은 그 과정에서 공동체를 기반으로 한 조상들의 관념과 지혜, 지식 등을 포함하는 사회문화적 의미와 가치를 인식할 수 있음을 뜻한다. 무형문화재 활용이 실존적 진정성을 경험하는 수준에까지 이르기 위해서는 몇 가지 정책적 변화가 필요하다. 구체적으로는 단순 관람에서 경험으로, 일시적 체험에서 장시간 또는 장기간에 걸친 경험으로, 객체에서 주체로, 결과물 중심에서 과정 중심으로, 상품화에서 문화 되살리기로 등을 무형문화재 활용 방향으로 요약할 수 있다. 실존적 진정성을 실현하기에 적합한 무형문화재들을 중심으로 더욱 적극적인 활용을 모색함으로써 무형문화재의 가치를 더욱 증진할 수 있을 것이며, 이러한 노력은 전통에 기초한 자연스러운 현대화를 통해 사회 속에서 무형문화재가 생명력을 확보하게 한다는 점에서도 의미가 크다. 또한 과정에 담긴 무형문화재의 본질적 가치를 누린다는 점에서 무형문화재 활용 수준을 높이는 방법이 될 수 있는 것이다.

Utilization of cultural heritage is gradually becoming more active, but the use of intangible cultural heritage is relatively inactive. Cultural heritage can make full use of its meaning when applied in a manner appropriate to its characteristics and values. In this study, it was found that intangible cultural heritage such as rituals, games, and craftsmanship are the most basic characteristic in that they mainly consist of acts. Therefore, the author searched for the direction of the utilization of intangible cultural heritage by using existential authenticity, which is the theory of activity or action. The author studied the cases of Tugging rituals and games at Gijisi village and Weaving of mosi (fine ramie) in Hansan region. Through these two examples, the author examined how to use intangible cultural heritage to raise the level. In contrast to previous studies that attempted to find ways to utilize individual intangible cultural heritage, this study is characterized by several of the following. Theoretical analysis while looking for ways to use intangible cultural heritage was examined. Researchers have forbidden the concept of “authenticity” in the field of intangible cultural properties, but this author studied this concept in connection with the utilization of intangible cultural properties. Also, the author sought the direction of qualitative application that is faithful to intrinsic value of intangible cultural heritage. Existential authenticity means that a person becomes a subject and feels himself/herself (ego) by doing physical or mental acts directly, and experiences his/her existence. In this sense, intangible cultural heritage experiences are suitable for experiencing existential authenticity in that they are done through acts and mental actions. It is culturally significant that we feel the existential authenticity through intangible cultural heritage that our community members have formed and maintained together for a long period of time. Furthermore, in the process of experiencing existential authenticity by directly performing the intangible cultural heritage, we can easily acknowledge the socio-cultural value and significance encompassed by our ancestors’ ideas, wisdom, knowledge, etc. in the community. In order to utilize intangible cultural heritage to reach the level of experiencing existential authenticity, several policy changes are necessary. Specifically, it can be summarized as a new direction of intangible cultural heritage utilization from simple viewing to experience, from temporary experience to long-term experience, from object to subject, from product-centered utilization to process-centered utilization, from commercialization to culture revival, etc. We are able to further enhance the value of intangible cultural heritage by seeking more active uses of intangible cultural heritage suitable for experiencing existential authenticity.
