‘Life’ is a critical principle in understanding the literary view and works of Pak Kyongni. In this study, with the review of the existing discussions of Pak Kyongni’s life, we suggest reading Pak Kyongni’s literature from the characteristics of ‘life consciousness’(“consciousness of life”) and its origin. To summarize the current discussions, they are summarized to be 1) the vitality (Lifism) as a bond with the local faiths including shamanism concentrated on Toji, 2) the thought of life formed in the viewpoint of the implementation and change of egoism and other recognition or shamanism and anarchism, etc., and 3) the thought of life combined with feminism and ecology, and all agree to regard Toji as the essence of the novelistic imagery of such things. In addition, there are discussions focusing on the viewpoint, literary view, method of creation, and life itself seen as a writing principle.
The question arising from these discussions is first, the way to view the life as a viewpoint of implementation, and the viewpoint to view Toji as its essence or it completion. Second, it is about the validity part for the ‘femininity = the vitality = the logic of land’. Third, it is the excessiveness of vocabulary associated with the ‘life’. Fourth, it is the validity part of approaching a particular theory.
In this article, the concise and simple reasoning, and the encounter of practical action and language are set as the ‘life consciousness" which consists of the authenticity of Pak Kyongni’s literature, and Pak Kyongni’s life consciousness has already been seen as functioning from the start of creation. In future, we suggest that Pak Kyongni’s literature should be actively read and grasped from the viewpoint of life consciousness of contradiction and activeness as the ‘activeness’, which includes the characteristics of ‘contradiction’ is the essence of life pursued by Pak Kyongni.
