This study expanded upon the findings of You, Kim, J. Park, H. Park, and Lee (2014), which studied the effects of the Collaborative Group Discussion method (CGD) for L2 learners’ Strategy Frame Shift (SFS; Duvernay & You, 2017) as measured by the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL; Oxford, 1990), and investigated correlations between gender and strategy use. An entry SILL survey was given to both control (n = 43) and experiment group (n = 39) participants—the former of which underwent a regular semester of an EFL discussion class while the latter were given four CGD sessions—and an exit SILL survey was given at the end of the semester to determine if there were any significant changes in strategy use for either group. The study found that females in the experiment group demonstrated significant shifts in the use of metacognitive and affective strategies, while males in the experiment group showed minor shifts in the use of metacognitive strategies. This study concludes that, while further research is required with larger subject groups and additional learner type factors, the CGD is an important pedagogical tool for increasing language learning strategy use in the EFL classroom for specific learner types and the Strategy Frame Shift model acts as a tool that can aid in identification of the learner types that will benefit most from the CGD.
