The purpose of this paper is to analyze the comparative urban characteristics of the growth and the geographical distribution of the company in Incheon, using Review on colonial Korea’s bank, firm and cooperative associations (『朝鮮銀行會社組合要錄』) as the main data.
The main results of this paper are as follows. 1) During the colonial period, Incheon tends to be understood as the representative Japanese city where the economy was run by the Japanese people. However, the urban character of Incheon changed greatly during the colonial period. The proportion of the population of Koreans increased from 57% in 1914 to 86% in 1938. Depending on the ethnic composition of the population, the number of Korean companies and Korean factories increased, and the economic activities of Koreans have been greatly enhanced. 2) Considering the company’s distribution by paid-in capital size or the regional composition of the main headquarters of a company with a branch or branch office, Incheon was a lower-order city with very weak characteristics as a higher-order city. 3) The company’s distribution by administrative district in Incheon shows that companies with small paid-in capital were very widely distributed. In 1938, 34 administrative districts of Incheon’s 35 administrative districts had the experience of establishing companies.

본 논문은 조선은행회사조합요록 을 주 자료로 하여 인천의 회사 발전의 비교 도시적 특질과 인천 내 회사의 지리적 분포를 분석한 것이다. 제2절에서는 조선 전체 및 인천의 업종별 회사수와 납입자본금의 추이를 분석하였으며, 제3절에서는 조선 전체 및 17개 주요 도시의 회사수와 납입자본금의 추이를 분석한 후, 인천의 회사수와 납입자본금 추이에서 보이는 비교 도시적 특질을 고찰하였으며, 제4절에서는 조선 전체에서의 납입자본금 규모별 구성과 주요 도시에서의 1회사당 납입자본금의 추이를 분석한 후, 인천의 납입자본금 규모별 회사 구성 및 1회사당 납입자본금 추이에서 보이는 비교 도시적 특질을 고찰하였으며, 제5절에서는 인천에서 회사의 동별 분포를 동별 민족별 인구구성 및 인구규모와 관련하여 분석하였다.
통상 식민지기 인천은 일본인 주도로 경제가 운영되었던 대표적인 일본인 도시로 이해되는 경향이 있지만, 본 연구에 의하면 인천의 도시적 성격은 식민지기 동안 크게 변모하였다. 인천의 일본인 인구 비중은 1914년38%에서 1938년 13%로 감소하였고, 조선인 인구 비중은 1914년 57%에서 1938년 86%로 증가하였으며, 이와 같은 민족별 인구 구성의 변화와 더불어, 조선인 회사와 조선인 공장도 증가하여, 인천 내 조선인 경제는 크게 강화되었다.
그러나 회사의 납입자본금 규모별 구성이나 지점이나 출장소를 가진 회사의 본점 소재지 구성으로 볼 때, 식민지기에 인천은 고차 도시로서의 성격이 매우 약한 저차 도시로 존재하였는데, 고차 도시인 경성이 인접해 있었던 점이 큰 영향을 미쳤다고 보인다. 회사 입지 상으로 볼 때, 인천이 가지는 이와 같은 비교 도시적 특질 때문에, 인천에서는 자본금이 적은 회사들이 광범하게 분포하는 형태로 회사가 발전하였다. 1938년에 인천의 동수는 35개였는데, 이중 주안정을 뺀 34개 동에는 회사가 설립된 경험이 있었다.
