The characteristic of cabin crews’ whose duty involves handling multiple passengers in an aircraft for a long period of time. Cabin crews are the ones spending majority of their working hours servicing passengers. This work environment brings cabin crews with both emotional labor and burnout that affects self-efficacy and their job satisfaction. This study examines cabin crew’s control over their self-leadership. Also, it is intended to find out how self-leadership of cabin crew affects their job satisfaction using self-efficacy as its mediation. A total of 325 questionnaires was distributed to domestic airlines cabin crews who has been working for their airlines for more than a year. Only 310 surveys that were found to be valid were empirically analyzed. With the collected questionnaires, the statistical program SPSS 22.0 was used to analyze the data. The analysis were frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and correlation analysis between constructs. With a proper suitability of the research model, multiple regression analysis was conductedto verify the hypotheses. The following results were drawn from this study: First, after conducting factor analysis on self-leadership, extracted factors were found to be ‘self-practical leadership’, ‘self-managerial leadership’, ‘attitudinal leadership’, ‘exploratory leadership’, and ‘positive leadership’. Second, after analyzing the relevance of the variables, self-leadership of cabin crews had significant effects partially on self-efficacy and job satisfaction.
The self-practical, exploratory, and positive leadership factors of self-leadership had a significant positive(+) effect on job satisfaction. However, the attitudinal leadership factor had a significant negative(-) effect on job satisfaction. The performance of attitudinal leadership, including the management of cabin crew’s external image, acted as a psychological stressful factor that could lead to lowering their job satisfaction. Third, an analysis on the mediating effect of self-efficacy was verified thatself-efficacy had a mediating influence on job satisfaction. Its result implied that the self-leadership of flight attendants does affect on job satisfaction indirectly rather than directly. Self-efficacy mediates the effect of self-leadership on job satisfaction.
Finding the sub factors that affects both self-efficacy and job satisfaction positively, it could help cabin crews improve their level of providing quality service to passengers. The results of the study are intended to provide a guideline that could enhance the psychological satisfaction of flight attendants.
