South Korea was alleged to be isolated with May 1968 Movement and international fierce demonstrations in the street although many journalists and intellectuals tried to introduce the contemporary overseas trends. However, it was evident in terms of cultural influence that Korean society accepted ’68 spirit mingled with counter-culture under the influence by American hippies’ revolutionary lifestyle and culture. Before Youth Culture of the mid-1970s’ Korea exploded under the influence upon the Western counter-culture, there had been good examples, such as essays by a poet Hwang Dong-kyu, a critic Kim Byung-ik, and especially a short story “The Other’s Room” by Choi Inho which was the first and only psychedelic literature in Korean literary history. And many writers tried to not only destroy the hierarchy between elite culture and popular culture through actively writing popular literature, but also realize sexual freedom by means of vulgar representation of free sex. Even if their efforts was restricted to the patriarchy and morals of the male-oriented society, their counter-cultural practices by literary representation of sexual freedom in popular stories showed the cultural influence by ’68 spirit and the subversive character of fighting the Establishment.
