Attributes have become one of the major factors in making purchasing decisions for hotel products. Keen and fierce competitions among hotels have led many hoteliers to seek out various ways to make a hotel profitable. One strategy that has been proven successful in the lodging industry is maximum utilization of catering services. The banquet, part of the catering service, can generate higher revenue than other departments by dint of flexible and diverse usage of banquet spaces. Unlike manufactured goods, whose quality can be measured objectively by such indicators as durability and the number of defects, intangibility and heterogeneity as well as inseparability characterize hotel service. In the absence of objective measurement, an appropriate approach to assessing a hotel service is to measure customer`s perceptions of banquet service attributes. Against this backdrop, the author attempts to research the followings. The purpose of the study is two fold: 1) to enhance understanding of the fundamental nature of hotel banquet attributes and contextual variables in decision-making process and 2) to empirically test the differences between the importance and the performance of banquet attributes in two purchasing contexts. To accomplish the study objectives, the author formulates three hypotheses. First, customers show significant differences between the importance and the performance in perceiving banquet attributes according to usage contexts. Second, customer satisfaction shows significant relationships with repurchasing intentions. Third, information sources in deciding banquet services show significant differences according to usage contexts.
