This study is about the development of Korea’s modern art photography based on the photography contest. Particularly focused on 《Joseon Photography Exhibition》 held from 1934 to 1943. 《Joseon Photography Exhibition》 had an immense influence in the modern period, it was not treated in detail because it was a Japan-oriented system. In a situation when there are not enough remaining modern photo works, 《Joseon Photography Exhibition》 is a significant material which can continuously analyze work of art photography through winning photo and identify in what aspect art photography were developed in Joseon. In this sense, want to find out about the institutional establishment of 《Joseon Photography Exhibition》 and the change in the tendency of art photography based on the winning photo.
《Joseon Photography Exhibition》 hosted by the Gyeongseong-ilbo and Entire Joseon Union in 1934, was sponsored by the Japanese Government General. This exhibition played the role of uniting the Joseon Photography circle. At the beginning stage of the contest, the discussion regarding the local color which commonly appeared in the art circle of the 1930s, appeared. At the same time the works that captured the objects from a variety of angles by using cameras appear. The atmosphere of the winning photos changed due to the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. The photo works, which expressed the dignity of the Japanese Imperial Army under the circumstances of state affairs and symbolized the attitude of the rear that can contribute in state affairs, became the mainstream.
《Joseon Photography Exhibition》 was the most important system in the modern period. But only a small portion of Koreans took part in the process of management, judgment, and ultimately winning a prize in the 《Joseon Photography Exhibition》. This can be a limit but winning the contest was a main goal even for Korean photographers and after its institutional organization this was also applied in other contest the main agents were Koreans.
This study based on the 《Joseon Photography Exhibition》, the artistic development and expression tendency of art photography. And reviewed the discussion of existing art photography. In the modern period, art photography were incorporated into the category of art, combining the term of art. It was a contest that played an important role in changing character of photography. Through a contest, photography were evaluated by a certain criterion and valued. Futhermore photography was presented as a subject of appreciation, and recognized as an art equivalent of painting. Through the institutional establishment, the photography was recognized as an independent genre and was guaranteed to be artistic.
