The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize between two types of sublimity in Lee Cheong-jun’s works of fiction and their aesthetic properties. While considering current bodies of research on the sublime in Lee’s works of fiction, this essay will focus on the discussion of metaphorical and metonymical sublime in the discussion of Thomas Weiskel. This character is particularly analyzed within the context of romantic poetry in terms of the sublime or sublimity. The two types of studied sublimity in Lee’s works of fiction will be divided into metaphorical (and reader’s) sublimity, and metonymical (and author’s) sublimity, and the aspects of the main theme and its meta-fictional duplication throughout all fiction will be distinguished according to the types of sublimity described previously. From the standpoint of observing the duplication of the epistemological topic of the main theme to metafictional structure, the metaphorical sublime in A Feigned sleep is repeated and doubled, while the metonymical sublime in The Gate of Time shows that a crossover between the interpretation and the theme of fiction ends up in a failure of combination, with an overflowing number of signifiers.
