Riding bicycle, an aerobic exercise which is known as good for weight control and health, is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly ways to transport. The purpose of this study was to develop the prediction equation to estimate the energy expenditure of cycling based on velocity and to cross-validate the equation for the application in the field. Apparently healthy adults (19~69 years, n=94) were asked to ride bicycle ergometer at low, moderate and high intensities in the laboratory. Energy expenditure were estimated using gas analysis. Dummy regression analysis was conducted with the energy expenditure as a dependent variable, and with age, sex (women), height, weight, % body fat, and velocity as independent variables. velocity-based cycle energy expenditure equation was as followed. y=2.739-.003(age)+.243(sex)-.031(height)+.058(weight)-.036(% body fat)+.012(velocity, m·min-1) (R² = 0.943). The validity of the prediction equation developed in this study was verified through a coefficient of intraclass correlation (ICC) and Bland & Altman plot. The prediction equation for cycle presented a high level of ICC (r=.944) and a low deviation of estimation error. In conclusion, the velocity-based energy expenditure equation for cycle in the study might be utilized to estimate energy cost of cycling. The equation developed in the study is useful using no extra device such as a power meter, heart rate monitors.
