The purpose of this paper is to suggest a direction for Korean Christian reconciliation ministry through observations of the Corrymeela community, a Christian reconciliation community in Northern Ireland. Christian reconciliation ministry is defined as the restoration and reshaping of all human relations. The foundation of Christian reconciliation is spirituality of reconciliation, that is the inner change made in peoples’ lives and actions, focusing on the change in relationships. It is only through such genuine spiritual reconciliation that social reconstruction can see fruition. Therefore, the Christian reconciliation ministry needs to focus on formation and enhancement of spirituality of reconciliation.
This paper studies how the Corrymeela community serves as a model community for the enrichment of spirituality of reconciliation on both a personal and communal level. As a result, this paper suggests that we need spaces for ‘learning reconciliation’ like Corrymeela community, which works to develop spirituality of reconciliation.
Northern Ireland is a nation that underwent violent political and religious conflicts. There were exertions for resolving conflict and reconciling with aspirations for a safer community without violence. Corrymeela reconciliation community, one of those exertions, is known as a haven without fear of violence for people in Northern Ireland, as well as for people all around the world. Corrymeela community provides a safety zone for people undergoing conflicts and troubles by educating them of concrete ways and processes to transform conflicts into reconciliation. Recently, Corrymeela community has expanded its spiritual ministry to bolster spirituality of reconciliation.
This paper is a research of practical theology, including a case study. It explores the history and present state of the reconciliation ministry of Corrymeela community through interviews with staff in the community and literature review. The ministry of reconciliation of Corrymeela has shifted from focusing on social-structural reconciliation to focusing on the enhancement of spirituality of reconciliation. Moreover, the spiritual ministry of Corrymeela has strengthened. Consequently, this paper suggests that Korean Christian reconciliation ministry needs to strengthen the ministry of spirituality of reconciliation. I expect that this research will contribute to the stimulation of discussions on the direction and actualization of the Christian reconciliation ministry.
