Since the 1980s the Korean government has planned several times the privatisation programme for public enterprises. The government, however, delayed the privatisation of the major public enterprises because of the problem of the economic power concentration, the bearish stock market and the employees` opposition. At present, the government faces the dilemma in the implementing of the privatisation programme such as Korea Telecommunication, Korea Heavy Industry, Korea Gas, etc. In order to obtain the lessons which are useful for the implementation and the problem solution of our privatisation programme, we analysed the policies and experiences of British privatisation for public enterprises in terms of ownership structure and the performance of the British privatised companies, and the regulation system for them. Through the examination of the positive impact of the privatisation policy on the competitiveness, efficiency and productivity of British privatised companies, we could conclude that the British privatisation programme is the right policy choice for the revitalisation of the British economy. Considering the lessons of British privatisation experiences, it is thought that the privatisation of Korean public enterprises should be implemented according to the planned programme overcoming the current issues such as the economic concentration of Chaebul, the small size of the stock market and the resistance of the employees.
