This is a study on the British policy toward Korea during World War Ⅱ in the general framework of postwar settlements by the Allies. The British foreign policy had always prioritized Europe, while Asian affairs were subsumed under imperial, colonial and commercial policy. The Korean question was also considered as a part of its efforts for the restoration of the British Empire in East Asia. Britain tried to avoid referring to the Korean question itself, not to mention the issue of independence even after the Cairo Declaration. Britain suggested various ideas in regard to the postwar settlement of Korea in its memoranda for the discussion with the United States but none was materialized partly due to the earlier conclusion of the war and partly due to the unenthusiastic attitude of the British side in this matter. In conclusion, the British approach to Korea during the war years can contribute to our understanding of "Korea in world politics."
