Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the processes of exploration young children exhibit in spontaneous object play and teachers’ plans for educational support.
Methods: Four 4-year-olds at S Kindergarten in Seoul participated in this study. Their play was observed in the classroom in two sessions each week from April to December 2012.
Results: Children made a race track and changed the rules of games in object play with a car and brick blocks. By doing so, they explored the physical properties of cars’ force and motion; measured and compared the distance traveled; and tested the hypotheses. They came to intuitively understand and verbally express the scientific concept of heaviness.
Conclusion: Teachers’ plans for support could be described as follows: First, teachers need to arouse educational interest among children so that they can explore an object while playing with it. Second, teachers can give support by presenting problems to solve and diverse variables and materials. Third, teachers can give support so that a fallacy of thinking can be solved by asking good questions to children.
