Based on the awareness that general education or general education colleges are becoming a battleground of conflicting interests within the university, this study reflects the current position of the general education literature lecture related to Chung-ang University and presents literary education as necessary general education.
Literary texts display the humanistic experience of human life as a universal symbol through systematic language. Thus, literature can be defined as the most important ingredient in educational literature, where the subject can experience life and its geopolitical aspects. The literary text and subject (reader) attain the understanding, analysis, and evaluation of literature through interaction. Through these processes, the subject focuses primarily on the linguistic characteristics of literary texts, followed by understanding their structural form eventually determining the context surrounding literary texts and evaluating their meaning. Thus, the subject of self-reliance is nurtured with an autonomous self and independent entity that can communicate with the world. Hence, literature on liberal arts education should be strengthened further.
Currently, general education for literature in Korean universities is not beyond the scope of “ Academic egoism.” The first step in solving this problem begins with creating a strong organization that can assemble all its faculty members and reshape the cultural curriculum entirely. Through this strong organization, it is important to significantly increase general education courses across academic boundaries and disciplines. This can also assist students to engage in academic studies that can contribute to expanding their academic background.
