The aim of this paper is to study the political elements and suggestions in Cymbeline, one of the last romances of William Shakespeare. By referring to the specific historic facts and customs of Shakespeare period, the writer tried to find them through analyzing the conversations and plots of the play. According to some scholars, there are some moments of dramatic incompleteness in Cymbeline. It is clear that Shakespeare constructed the seemingly unrelated multi-plots of this play for some ambiguous purposes. For example, the sub-plot involving Belarius, Guiderius and Arviragus has no coherent relationship with the main plot involving Posthumus, Iachimo and Imogen. The inappropriateness of personality created is about to become a topic for another criticism.
Firstly, I focused on the marriage, so-called ‘the unexecuted political marriage’ between Imogen and Cloten, in order to find some symbolic suggestions or allusion in the political sense. Secondly, I tried to suppose and pursue reasonable grounds for Shakespeare’s use of Jupiter’s guest appearance in Act 5, scene 4. Through these studies, the writer found that there are significant and complex political suggestions relating to succession to the throne of King Cymbeline, the Kingdom of Britain and marriage of convenience in this play. Therefore, the paper regards these hints as a kind of satire on the practices of the English royal weddings and marriage of convenience in those days like King James I actually did. Historically, he had his daughter Elizabeth marry the Elector Palatine of Germany on 14 February of 1613 for his own political benefits. Although there are some elements of satire in the play, the main purpose of the play is the deification of King James I, which seemingly originated from a hope to gain the King’s kindness to Shakespeare’s playing company, King’s Men.
The writer would like to say that those elements and suggestions are strongly connected with King James I who lived at the time Shakespeare moved and worked. In conclusion, those elements and suggestions are surely designed intentionally in order to execute plans such as welcoming the King’s accession, pledging allegiance to the King, or even the deification of King James I, the patron to the King’s Men of Shakespeare’s company.
