The purpose of this study is to investigate how well university students understand ambiguous sentences in English and to identify effects of prosodic and contextual cues in the resolution of said sentences. Two types of questionnaires were made for this research: One to identify students" awareness of ambiguity and the other in relation to grasping for preferences in the methods of translation. Results of this study were as follows: (1) The percentage of correct answers for lexical and structural ambiguity was 43.3%, and 58.9%, respectively. (2) Students showed notable improvement in the interpretation of ambiguous English sentences when contextual cues were added (t=-5.494, p<.05).
It can be concluded that university students" awareness of ambiguity in English was low and their awareness of structural ambiguity was developed significantly when contextual cues were added.
