Yuanhun zhi 冤魂志(Tales of Vengeful Souls) also called Huanyuan ji 还冤记 or Huanyuan zhi 还冤记, is an early collection of novels compiled by the Sui 隋Dynasty writer and philosopher Yan Zhitui 顔之推, author of the Yanshi jiaxun 顔氏家训. It originally had three juans, but seems to be lost after the Song 宋Dynasty. It belongs to the genre of novellas on zhiguai xiaoshuo 志怪小说and contains 61 short stories and anecdotes from the Zhou 周Dynasty to the Northern Zhou 北周and Chen 陈Dynasties. All stories deal with the return of a soul to take revenge for suffered unjustice. They are both influenced by Confucian thought as well as by the religion of Buddhism.
This paper has three parts. First part is a brief research on Yuanhun zhi including its bibliographical records, author’s profile, original book’s format, publication time of it. Second part is compiling and collating 61 scattered manuscripts of Yuanhun zhi extracted from other books such as Fayuan zhulin 法苑珠林and Taiping guangji 太平广记. Third part is evaluating the significance and influence of Yuanhun zhi in the history of Chinese zhiguai xiaoshuo.
