In his later poetry, Larkin developed his poetic style in a way which enabled him to deal with broader scope of human experience than in his earlier volumes. His poems with urban backgrounds achieved the particularity of the situations adequately. The themes which he had dealt with in his earlier volumes came to be treated in more particular backgrounds. Although he wrote poems which emphasize everyday experience, he extended his interest in the social sphere. He dealt with common people who lived under the social conditions of that time. Larkin’s poetry, the vivid response to contemporary British society, criticizes commercialism and other values. Instead, Larkin thinks highly of the community values which are disappearing now. In Larkin’s poetry, the speaker observes the common people who lead ordinary lives from detached stance. The people of Larkin’s poetry do not free themselves from the world of work. The real world, which Larkin creates as it appears to him, is just the world where we must live.
