Philip Larkin makes efforts to write about only what he feels deeply in life. Larkin chooses the material of his poetry from everyday experiences which move him deeply because he believes that poetry can communicate pleasure to the reader by recording actual experiences faithfully. Thomas Hardy’s poetry gave him confidence to feel in his own way. Larkin’s main concern is focused on the problems common people can observe in the life around them. I examined Larkin’s attitude toward life in terms of his personal experiences and the social and cultural backgrounds of contemporary Britain. Larkin’s attitude toward life is closely related to British social and cultural backgrounds which the Movement poets shared. But Philip Larkin’s poetry goes beyond the limitations of the Movement poets. Although it is considered a typical poem of the Movement, “Church Going” presents a more imaginative understanding of the social situation of contemporary Britain.
