IS(Islamic state) has its own territory and people and works as a state with a government structure. They are waging battles and carrying out terrorism in various places in the world. They consider the West including the United States, Israel, Shia Muslims, Christians, and Taliban as enemies. Therefore they are waging battles against the whole world. Arabs and non-Arabs are all feeling the same way and reacting against IS’ violent aggression.
Samuel Huntington, a political scientist in the United States, explains Islamic history with aggression and violence. He said that the clash between the West and the Islamic civilization lasted during past 1300 years, and it seemed to be worsened in the future. Furthermore, the clash is taking place not only between the West and Islam but also among the Muslims in Arab world.
Gilles Kepel explains this aspect of Islamic world with the concept of fitna. According to him, Islamic society was led by two axes, Jihad and fitna. Fitna is something like suffering, persecution, internal war or threat which makes the community is divided and collapses. Fitna makes the Muslim society weaken from the inside. So the Muslim community and religious scholars make efforts to avoid it by all means. However, the occupation of Iraq by America and its allies opened the Pandora’s Box of Middle East and exposed the conflict and hostility between races and tribes. Today the situation of the Middle East is exactly fitna.
The belligerence is evident in the Quran which the Muslims believe as God’s revelation. The so-called “Sword Verses” of the Quran encourage militancy and violence. The fundamentalists argue that all beliefs and actions of Muslims should come directly from the scriptures. So they interpret the scriptures personally and literally, and apply it to the real life. The “Sword Verses” explains why the fundamentalists so often cause conflicts and clashes.
Then how should the Christians treat those who cause anger and hatred in many forms? The Bible contains prayers against enemies in Psalm which asking divine punishment for them. This fact makes us quite uncomfortable because Christianity, the religion of love and peace, has the same attitude as Islam, violent and aggressive, by asking punishment and revenge against the enemy.
However, we need to understand the Psalms in the context of the Bible. These Psalms expose violence in society and anger of the world, but it is not to agitate anger in people’s mind but just to express anger itself for the humans and the world. People are able to face anger in this way, and the Psalms teach them to relinquish violence to react rightly and overcome the violence. These Psalms as well teach about the end of the world by the advent of the kingdom of righteousness and peace.
The Bible clearly says not to revenge directly. It is denying God who is the Judge and the Lord. It also says to love the enemy and pray for him. Furthermore it says to help the enemy when he is in need by giving him food and drink. We can find good examples and witnesses of defeating the evil by doing good through the church history and also among the contemporary Christians especially living in the Muslim countries.
