In 2017, there are a 2 million foreigner in South Korea. The ten percent them are Muslims who believe in Islam and every year their population is rapidly increasing. Since September 11, 2001, Islamophobia has occurred worldwide and this viewpoint is dominant among the Korean Christian community over Muslims. Islamophobia refers to prejudice that hates and frightens Islam and Muslims.
Is Islam necessarily a subject of vigilance? This is clearly a wrong attitude. Indeed, less than 1% of the total Muslim population has recently been a threat to terrorism around the world and has a radical Islamic appearance. Since there are various classes in Islam, understanding Muslim as a potential terrorists is a prejudice. Of course, it does not mean to treat Muslims without any warning. Obviously there is a point to be cautious. Yet, by the perspective of the kingdom of God, Muslims should be saved in Christ as well. In such a sense, Christians should be more creative in looking at Muslims who currently live in Korea.
Muslims are distributed all over the world now. And many missionaries are out to preach the gospel to them. However, it is very difficult to get some reports that win them back. Why? However, it is true we sit still in our room, but Muslims are very close to us. How should this be interpreted? I believe that Christians should accept this situation as an opportunity from God in order to both change an viewpoint toward Muslims and reset for Islamic missions.
How then can we understand, evangelize, and move to the stage of nurturing Korean migrants? Through this article, I hope that Korean Christianity will be able to have a view that Korean migrant Muslims, so that Christians do not consider them as fearful neighbors. I also hope that I will be able to go beyond the level of change of cognition to the stage of evangelism and nurturing, which invite them to the people of the kingdom of God.
