As the most of socio-cultural infrastructures of Korea are clustered in Seoul metropolitan area, the cultural tourism for the rest of the country is severely hindered. The museums and art galleries are proven assets with respect to the tourist attraction of local art and culture. This paper attempts at conducting a foundational research on the status quo of the private arts museums located in the coastal region of Korea, in particular, the Jeollanam-do Province and Gyeongsangnam-do Province.
The total of 18 private arts museums registered in 13 distinct Si and/or Gun of the area were chosen for this case study, and investigated via in situ studies and other supplemental data. The administrators and curators were interviewed in depth, and the major diagnosis of the problems and potentials are reported around the topical issues of the background, purpose, rewards, meaningfulness, and operational difficulties that are specific to the individual museums.
Whereas the research on arts museums from the perspective of consumer is rich, the research from the provider’s perspective is poor. This study contributes to the latter perspective by analyzing non-metropolitan coastal region of the country. This research may also lay some groundwork for the relevant policy-makings that facilitate construction and maintenance of private arts museums in the South coastal belt of Korea.
