In 2017 the Protestant Church celebrates the 500th anniversary of Luther’s Reformation in Germany. The starting point of this Reformation was Luther’s rediscovery of the power of the gospel in Romans 1:17. The Reformation principle of sola scriptura derived from this biblical insight and formed an important theological legacy of the Korean Presbyterian Church.
In this article I discuss how this Reformation principle of sola scriptura was first formed and understood in Luther’s mind and then how it was rediscovered and understood by L. Ragaz, who’s rediscovery of the principle will be the main focus of this article. “The Bible interprets itself (sui ipsius interpres).”
Luther’s idea of sola scriptura was inherited by two Blumhardts in the 19th century and by Ragaz in the 20th century. In the process of healing a mentally sick woman through prayer, Blumhardt the father rediscovered this principle. He witnessed to her liberation from the mental illness through the guidance of the Holy Spirit who testifies the Word of God in the Bible (testimonium spiritus sancti internum). Blumhardt the son inherited this theological legacy. He insisted that as a ‘Word-event’ the Bible is “the fountain from which the living water overflowing” and “the mustard seed of God’s kingdom growing on soil.”
