This study attempted to familiarize us with Luther the builder of the evangelical church, and with Luther the person. Thus this study is designed to review Luther in the tension between Luther as a reformer and Luther as a people. In general, Luther is reviewed from the view point of the Luther as a reformer. The majority of the study of Luther is to review his thought in the variety of arguments. It is to based on the theological works.
Therefore, this study is contributed to see Luther as a person. Thus It is based not his theological works but his letters in the volume 49 of the American Edition of Luther"s Works. It is the second volume of letters in this series. It presents 117 letters written by Luther from March, 1522 to October, 1530.
This period stretched from the time that Luther, the heretic and outlaw, returned from the Wartburg to the Diet of Augsburg in 1530. During this period Luther concentrated to build the church of the gospel with all his strength So the years from 1522 to 1530 were for Luther to build and clarify his evangelical insight. But this process of emergence also was a painful one. He lost his old friends. Even they became his foes.
