The central theological concern of the religious reformer Martin Luther(1483-1546) is generally known as the doctrine of justification. However, in addition to the doctrine of justification, the ‘Theology of the Cross’ played an important role in the Reformation. Mysticism of Luther, based on the Theology of the Cross, may be interpreted as a movement of faith towards ‘ad fontes’. The God of Luther whom he met through prayer, Word and tribulations was God of the Essence(體), God of the Attributes(相) and God of the Function(用).
This study explores Luther’s mystical experience of God in light of the principles of the Essence, Attributes and Function suggested in the Buddhist scripture, Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna. Based on the explication, the author argues that Luther"s mysticism is ‘existential and practical mysticism’ which is experienced in the ordinary daily life not the ontological mysticism in which God and humanity become one. The author attempts to supports the argument in terms of investigating into the mysticism of Luther based on the core mottos of sola fide, sola gratia, solus Christus, and sola scriptura in light of the Buddhist principles of the Essence, Attributes and Function.
This study shows that Luther’s mysticism is, to be sure, the movement of ‘democratization of mysticism’ which means everybody can experience God in the ordinary life. The Buddhist principles of the Essence, Attributes and Function help us to illumine that Luther’s God is an ‘ordinary God’ who is open to all. The ordinariness and democratization of this experience of God became the driving force of the Reformation. This is the characteristics and meaning of Luther’s mysticism.
