This study is about the development and classification system of the "Introduction to Folklore" in China, especially dealing with four major textbooks written by Wubingan(烏丙安), Zhangzichen(張紫晨), Taolifan(陶立璠), and Zhongjingwen(鐘敬文). And I investigate the ideas and perspectives of Chinese folklore in Modern period(1912-1945) for the background in advent of its introductory textbook. Also I analyse the publication and the aspect of transition of the textbook published after folklore had been designated as a national second-class discipline.
Introduction reflects one science"s theory has grown to maturity relatively. It plays a role when providing convincible theories and contributing to train professional talents further more than just giving a novel and sharp vision or in-depth analysis. The four introductory textbooks mentioned above became the foundation to revitalize Chinese folklore which had been stagnant for about 30years from 1949 to 1976. And by nourishing and suppling the competent persons, these books played a part in establishing folklore as an approved study by China government in 1997.
Compared to the first half of 20th century, Chinese folklore has passed from the blind simulation times. It still refers to theories in foreign countries but it never follows them simply. In addition, it has made an effort to construct a theoretical system in folklore based on folk materials in its country. Even though the four texts do not represent the whole folklore academic world of China, Introductions in differently specialized divisions have been published by the growing new capacity. Therefore new Introduction to folklore in China is expected to come into the world following a state of a period.
