This study aims to analyze polysemous tendencies in the use of prefix over and preposition over by identifying a semantic parameter that differentiates the two. This study first compares different semantic structures of polysemy over in them in terms of prototypicality based on a cognitive-semantic approach. This study further examines semantic differences expressed in the two distinct structures; ‘over (prefix) + head’ and ‘head + over (preposition).’ As for the prototypicality of the two, the data analysis of this study reveals that the notion of ‘excess’ is the most prototypical type in the use of prefix over while the notion of ‘spatial above’ is the most salient type in the use of preposition over, thus suggesting that the prototype of prefix over denotes a conceptual derivation from the spatial notion of the prepositional prototype. The findings also suggest that there exist semantic variations between expressions of phrasal verbs with preposition over and those of compounds with prefix over despite the same morphemes. Their differences seem to be significantly affected by the versatile semantic function of polysemy over.
