This study aims to address the diachronic and synchronic analyses of the topic markers as for and as to from a perspective of grammaticalization with the aid of the OED and corpora. The OED lays down as to be a prefix in as for and as to. It is argued that the topic markers as for and as to have been grammaticalized into univerbated prepositions under the construction of [as, prefix + for/to, preposition] from the construction of [as, conjunction + for/to, preposition]. As-prefixed prepositions came into being in the Middle English period. Paradigmatic analogy motivated their grammaticalization. Diachronic and synchronic corpora provide the difference in frequency pmw between as for and as to. Frequencies pmw and collocation controls illustrate a preference for syntactic positions, modes, and domains of the two topic markers.
