This study examines how differently the issues of Korean ‘comfort’ women and the survivors’ testimonies are understood in Korea and Japan, by analysing the author Kwon Yoon-Duck’s experiences in the process of representing and publishing the picture book, Flower Granny. This study pays special attention to emotion as Flower Granny is a public space where the author’s emotions are circulated and transmitted to the readers. Emotion enters politics when it becomes collective. In this regard, by examining Kwon Yoon-duck’s work, this study reviews how an international mediator of memories represents her emotions in the picture book and what roles they play. In conclusion, this study reveals that the author’s strategy of not highlighting Japan as an aggressor country in Flower Granny is accepted by general readers. However, it is argued that the future of the book’s publication in Japan remains uncertain as anti Korean ‘comfort’ women sentiment based on sexism and nationalism is prevalent in Japanese society.
