This paper raises a question on a widely-spread view of Chae, Man sik"s Tae-Pyong-Chon-Ha. In relation to ‘Pansori’, Lee Joo-hyeong interprets Chae, Man sik as a storyteller who freely used irony and satire techniques in his influential research on Tae-Pyong-Chon-Ha. He traces back the origin of Chae, Man sik’s novel technique to Pansori. From the viewpoint of an intrinsic development theory, which seeks the connection between classical literature and modern one, this interpretation has been accepted as an effective doctrine to explain the continuity of Korean literature. However, considering the case of Chae, Man sik, who tried to develop novel techniques in the sense of media technology, the characteristic of the speaker is closer to the ‘talking voice’(technique of sound) of a silent film, narrator of a news movie or storyteller of a phonograph record, rather than Pansori performers. The voices of the characters of Tae-Pyong-Chon -Ha are symbols of his contemporary society through the use of oral techniques such as profanity, irony, paradoxical accusation, criticism and contempt for each other, unilateral hearing and intentional misinterpretation.
