‘□ㅎ’ and ‘□ㅎ ’ are interpreted as ‘origin’ in the archaic word dictionaries, 『고어사전』 or 『이조어사전』 Although ‘□ㅎ’ and ‘□ㅎ’ are semantically related, the dictionary definitions of the two words need to be examined and interpreted differently.
The Chinese characters corresponding to ‘□ㅎ’ are two words; ‘奧’ and ‘源’. In the medieval language the distribution of these two words was fairly limited and commonly corresponded to Chinese characters ‘源’. Of course, ‘□ㅎ’ corresponding to the Chinese character ‘奧’ is universal on several bases : (1) The current ‘profoundity’ shows transition of the meaning in the late medieval language. In the Standard Korean Dictionary, ‘profoundity’ is defined as ‘to be profound and delicate’. Considering ‘深’ connects directly to ‘gipeun(기픈)’, ‘奧’ is derived basically from the meaning ‘the truth that leads to enlighten’. Consequently, the meaning of ‘truth’ is from ‘深’, and ‘truth’ itself corresponds to ‘delicate’. (2) Directly, ‘深奧’ means ‘immeasurable significance’. To be ‘immeasurable’ means something ‘profound’, so that it is difficult to measure the depth. (3) The use of ‘深奧’ in the 18th century is the same as the present use. By means of semantic transition already occurred, the independent function as a noun ‘奧’ has disappeared. ‘奧’ combined with ‘深’ is used to mean ‘profound and delicate’. It also appears in the form of the root preceding ‘-ㅎ-’. (4) Chinese characters ‘奧’ and ‘源’ corresponding to ‘□ㅎ’ have the common meaning, ‘deep’. But ‘□ㅎ’ corresponding to ‘源’ indicates a specific situation or object associated with ‘water(水本)’.
The Chinese character corresponding to ‘□ㅎ’ is limited only to ‘源’. ‘□ㅎ’ is described only as a qualifier, but not used as an independent element. There are some evidences for this: (1) For the meaning of ‘水泉本 ’ in the Chinese character ‘源’, its examples corresponding to the ‘웃듬 믈’ can be seen in 『두시언해』. This seems to be directly related to the basic meaning of ‘□ㅎ’. (2) Given that the example of the ‘□ㅎ’ are from 『두시언해』, the nature of the Chinese poetry can be revealed more accurately by examining the basic meaning of the word. (3) Even though ‘□ㅎ’ directly interpreted as ‘source’ looks awkward, it has a relevant source. That is, ‘□ㅎ’ can mean a variable of derivatives depending on the context.
In conclusion, ‘□ㅎ’ and ‘□ㅎ’ are synonymous by the meaning of ‘origin’ in the archaic word dictionaries. But this specific meaning is not used for the direct Chinese characters ‘根源’. In the Buddhist scriptures translation such as 『금강경삼가해』, 『영가집언해』,‘□ㅎ’ is not found, yet the Chinese character ‘根源’ is found frequently. In some cases, ‘□ㅎ’ appears with the Chinese character ‘根源’ in 『능엄경언해』. These will clearly not convey the same meaning. Moreover, since the Chinese character ‘根源’ was used earlier than ‘□ㅎ’, the sudden emergence of ‘□ㅎ’ is unique. Because ‘□ㅎ’ and ‘□ㅎ’ have a conceptual meaning in the Chinese characters, they do not link to a specific word. The conceptual meaning might have been useful for the Buddhist scriptures.
