This research focuses on the divinities in the Samguk yusa in relation to the Avatamsaka pantheon. Divinities may simply mean a group of gods in general but here the word ‘divinities (神衆)’ is used to refer to the shamanic gods syncretized with the Buddhist deities and the divinities of the Avatamsaka pantheon. The guardian god of dragon, for example, is also included in the guardian gods of the Avatamsaka deities. During the Three Kingdom period the ancients would often appeal to shamanic deities for help and employed primitive magic to attain desired results. Yet, they also embraced the Buddhist idea of practice leading to enlightenment as necessary to attain the power of the Dharma so as to ensure national protection and wellbeing of all sentient beings. The gods of the national foundation, Dangun, and Hwanin, and other traditional shamanic deities, have all been syncretized with the Buddhist divinities, to encourage good, punish evil and protect the nation. In addition to practical interests and national prosperity, the syncretic inclusion of virtuous gods, such as Dharma Protector Dragons with Buddhist divinities, boosted efforts to propagate the Buddhist teachings while elevating these shamanic deities to the realm of Dharma protection divinities. Consequently. in addition to propagating the Buddha’s teaching as a means to save all sentient beings, the sacred divinities of the Hwaeom pantheon were declared as deities offering protection to the nation. Those 39 Sacred divinities in the Avatamsaka sutra and 104 deities of dharma protection are still worshipped by Korean Buddhists today throughout the peninsula.
