This paper deals with the effect of parental socioeconomic status on children’s academic achievement in Korea. This kind of topic has been quite common in academia. Nevertheless, there are two points this study distinguishes itself from other studies on the issue: one is to place the Korea’s inequality in the context of international and temporal comparison. This study tries to compare the Korea’s inequality of educational opportunity with those of other countries and to contrast the Korea’s inequality at an early point in the first decades of 2000s with that of a later point in the same period; The other is to do a methodological comparison. It measures the status and trends of educational inequality both by the ordinary least square(OLS) regression and by the multi-level model, and then compares the estimates of the former with those of the latter. The data used here are PISA(Programme for International Student Assessment), collected in 2000 and 2009 by OECD. Findings were as follows: First, the effect of parental socioeconomic status on children’s reading literacy had been much lower during the first decades of the 2000s in Korea than those of any other OECD countries. Second, however, the influence of parental socioeconomic status on children’s reading literacy had increased during the same period in Korea, which simply means that the inequality of educational opportunity had deteriorated during the early 2000s. Third, the above two results are true both in the OLS estimation and in the multi-level analysis.
