The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to examine the relationship between L2 reading and L2 listening competence on L2 developmental stages and 2) to explicate the relationship based on this study’s results plus an in-depth literature review in this field. For data collection, this study employed a simulated TOEIC test, which was administered to the participants (n= 1,308) at a university. The data analysis indicated that there was a significant positive relationship (r= .549, p.<.01) between L2 listening and L2 reading competence. However, the relationship between the two competences on L2 developmental stages were negative. More interestingly, the relationships between L2 proficiency and L2 listening competence were consistent on developmental stages whereas the relationships between L2 proficiency and L2 reading competence were fluctuating. It seemed true that ‘intralingual transfer’ from L2 literacy to L2 orality could be far more complicated than expected. Based on the findings, this study discussed theories and perspectives as an attempt to explicate the nature of the relationship between the two competences. Eventually, this study concluded with some implications for English education.
