The aim of this study is to provide an empirical investigation of the relationship between self-efficacy and communicative competence of undergraduates. For this research, a survey was conducted targeting undergraduates taking classes in speaking and writing. The research results were found as follows;
First of all, self-efficacy has a significant effect on communicative competence. Specifically, receptive competence, transmission competence and adjustment competence are significantly related to self-efficacy. In other words, undergraduates who have a high level of self-efficacy might act with higher confidence when communicating.
Secondly, the study was extended regarding the relationship between non-cognitive elements and communicative competence from the speaking area to the writing area. This is dissimilar from previous studies. It was very important to encompass a variety of undergraduate majors to extend the scope and level of previous studies.
Finally, the significance and necessity of self-appraisals, which includenon-cognitive factors on communicative competence, are proved. By measuring the level of self-efficacy and communicative competence, and analyzing the correlation between the factors, we discerned the importance of non-cognitive factors. In addition, we found that self-appraisals can be an important method for diagnosing communicative competence.
