Novels dealing with North Korean immigrants started appearing on the South Korean literary scene in the mid-1990s when defections from the North began in earnest. With the publication of “Heavy Life” by Kim Ji-soo, South Korean writers have written books about the life of people in the North, their escape across the border, illegal stay in China, and arrival and adjustment to the country of their final destination. To date, several short stories, book-length novels, and serialized novels about North Korean immigrants have been published, and literary critics and academics have taken an interest in this issue and have undertaken a sizable amount of research about it.
This paper studies three serialized novels and thirteen book-length novels and examines their portrayal of the lives of North Korean immigrants. Novels dealing with the theme of North Korean immigrants portray the hardships they face in their journey from the North to their final destination through China, and the problems they experience in adjusting to their new home. I study sixteen works and sort their portrayal of North Korean immigrants into different phases, such as life in North Korea, life in China, the border crossing, and life in their new home, and then analyze which phase each work concentrates on. Finally, I suggest a way ahead for novels dealing with the issue of North Korean immigrants.
