This study attempted to solve the two problems in decoding Hyangchal(叱). One is related to the old sound of Chinese character(叱). The other is related to the function and sound of the genitive case of the Hyangchal(叱/si) between ‘-Vc’ type nouns and nouns. The first problem could be solved by supplementing the Chinese sound with the old sound ‘si(t)’ found in Buddhist scriptures transliterating Sanscrit to Chinese, and with the sound ‘sil’ in Hyangchal(叱) transliterating old Korean sounds to Chinese characters. Meanwhile, I attempted to solve the second problem in accordance with two arguments. One is that the Kwukyel[□/si, the same character in the Hyangchal(叱/si)], is transliteration of the Chinese character(之, genitive case), or corresponds to the Chinese character(之) in Buddhist scriptures written in Kolye. The other argument is that the old sound of the Chinese character(叱) is presumed to be the sound ‘si,’ discovered in the Chinese characters(寺, 時, 詩, 侍, 恃, 邿) having the same sound mark in the old character(㞢). In this study, I justified my arguments based on a comprehensive literature review.
