Internet of Things (IoT) is a dynamically evolving new area of knowledge generation that has been attracting considerable attention for its potential consequences in the economic, regulatory and other sectors. Much as it is fast gaining in popularity and importance, IoT is still ambiguously defined as to its subject matter. The aim of this paper is to analyse the essence of IoT and clarify its multi-dimensional nature not just as a new prospective economic activity related to data but also as a knowledge producing mechanism, a governance and policy tool, a pioneering new technology facilitator etc. These multiple elements in the nature of IoT mean, consequently, multiple regulatory challenges as well. Although the fluidity that is currently defining the whole sector does not allow yet for a concrete, holistic approach to the regulatory challenges associated to it, the legal aspects of IoT are already a hot topic of discourse. The paper presents some of the key issues of the debate, focusing on the German perspective for regulating IoT matters. To make the arguments presented in it more illustrative, the paper discusses these issues within the context of automated and connected driving.
