Tightrope walking is a traditional performance which a tightrope walker performs various arts, witty talks, and songs on a tightrope, with clown and samhyeonyukgak musicians below the rope. Currently there are two types of tightrope walking that are passed down, gwangdae jultagi of hereditary shamans and Namsadangpae eoreum jultagi of the nomadic entertaining troupes.
Eoreum jultagi is one of the six plays of Namsadangpae, who wandered around with no fixed abode and was in charge of the folk plays. Eoreum jultagi has two actors, which are eoreumsani(tightrope walker) and maehossi(clown).
Namsadangpae eoreum jultagi was selected as an item in 1988 when the entire Namsadang play extendedly became an important intangible cultural asset, but could not produce an expert. Since then the transmission of Namsadangpae eoreum jultagi was put in a difficult situation with eoreumsani Jo Song-ja’s death.
To summarize the traits that Namsadangpae eoreumsani Jo Song-ja"s tightrope walking has as a performing art are as follows.
First, Jo Song-ja’s eoreum jultagi has achieved a unique creation through improvisational variations and formations in open performing structure. Jo Song-ja performed an advanced art on a high tightrope, singing or delivering witty talk that meets the situation of the performance arena with maehossi and musicians below the rope.
Second, Jo Song-ja’s eoreum jultagi is the blend of subtle sensitivity that is unique to women and humorous jokes, an independent performance distinctive from the gwangdae jultagi. Jo Song-ja provided the audience with dramatic pleasure, pacified the contradictions and conflicts in life, and brought new energy to their lives through his unique performance.
Third, the artistic specialty displayed by eoreumsani Jo Song-ja was accumulated for a long time, since it cannot be raised in a short period. Jo Song-ja performed tightrope walking accommodating accordingly to the changes of the times, based on the artistic background of hereditary shamans.
Fourth, Jo Song-ja"s eoreum jultagi has achieved to gain the antique and simple beauty. Although he is an expert of tightrope walking, eoreumsani Jo Song-ja intentionally shows risky scenes as if he is an unskilled performer who could fall down at any moment. However, it was the result of a thoroughly planned direction which can only be done by the performer who has reached the highest level.
