This paper attempts to find out the descriptive purpose and significance of “Summary Of The History of Song Dynasty” that has not been studied in the Korean academic community. “Summary of The History of Song Dynasty” compiled by King Jeong- jo of the Joseon Dynasty is the Chinese historical books covering a period from the North Song to the South Song dynasty in a chronological order. It is consisted of approximately 76,000 letters of six volumes, each volumes named by Six Rituals : Rites(禮), Music(樂), Archery(射), Charioteering(御), Calligraphy(書), Mathematics(數). The book’s content mainly deals with the political views and policies of the famous literary officials of the Song Dynasty and respect for Confucianism. In particular, King Jeong-jo took note of historical facts that could be a lesson and boundary to his political reality, especially from the historical experience of Confucian politics in Song Dynasty. He compiled the book to extract the essence of Confucian politics from the ups and downs and political successes and failures of the Song Dynasty’s history. He had already mastered the history of the Song Dynasty by reading history books and writing them himself even before he ascended to the throne. Therefore, “Summary Of The History of Song Dynasty” is a valuable historical legacy that reflects Jeong-jo’s historical view while projecting very clearly his position on the direction of real politics.

이 연구는 조선후기 정조가 편찬한 사서 『宋史撮要』의 고증과 그 의의를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 총 6책 7만 5천 여 字 분량의 이 사서는 북송 태조부터 남송 효공제 재위 기간까지 300여 년 간의 주요 史實 속에 등장하는 역사적 인물들의 정치·사상·문화적 성취와 행적을 요약적으로 선별해 수록하고 있다. 편년체 형식을 채택하고 있지만, 송조의 군주와 명신들의 정치적 견해와 사상을 중심 내용으로 삼고 있다. 무엇보다 그 체재와 내용에서 매우 독창적인 구성을 띠고 있다. 禮·樂·射·御·書·數 등의 六藝를 각각 책명으로 편성하고, 주요 대사의 전개 과정에서 나타난 정책과 대응방안을 위주로 기록했다. 정조는 자신의 현재적 관점에서 실제적 ‘鑑戒’가 될 수 있는 유교정치의 구체적 사례와 전형을 집약하고자 했다. 따라서 이 사서는 정조의 역사관을 반영하는 동시에 현실 정치의 방향성에 대한 입장을 매우 선명하게 투영하고 있는 귀중한 역사 유산이다. 『송사촬요』는 현재 편자와 편간 연대 ‘미상’의 필사본으로 서울대학교 규장각에 소장되어 있지만, 가장 기초적인 고증 작업조차 이루지지 못했으며, 학계의 관련 연구는 현재까지 전혀 없는 실정이다. 2000년 이후 『宋史筌』에 대한 국내외 연구는 비교적 다양한 시각에서 깊이 있는 분석이 이루어졌던 반면, 이 『송사촬요』는 그 편찬과정에 관한 구체적인 기록이 『정조실록』이나 『일성록』 등의 문헌사료에서는 전혀 찾아볼 수 없다. 조선총독부 통역관 겸 고서 연구가였던 마에마 교오사쿠(前間恭作, 1868~ 1942)의 『古鮮冊譜』(1944)에는 “『송사촬요』가 정조 즉위 이전 동궁에 있을 때 편찬을 명했으며, 친히 편수한 6책본과 3책본이 있다”고 기록했다. 정조가 이렇게 宋史에 대한 ‘撮要’의 과정에서 찾으려고 했던 유교정치의 典範과 鑑戒의 내용은 구체적으로 무엇인가? 이 질문에 대한 실체적 해답을 찾는 것이 바로 이 연구의 목적이다.
